Shirley A. Derry

January 19th, 1931 – June 12th, 2020

Shirley Alice Derry, age 89 of Macomb, Illinois, formerly of Astoria, Illinois, passed away at 2:45 pm Friday, June 12, 2020 at The Elms in Macomb. She was born on January 19, 1931, the daughter of Russell and Velma (Tyler) Thompson. On November 23, 1951, Shirley married Donald Derry in Astoria. He preceded her in death on July 25, 1990.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Taylor.

Shirley is survived by her son, Stephen Derry of Astoria.

She worked for the Ken-Ray Foundry in Vermont, Illinois and for Astoria Fiber-Steel

Shirley was a member of the Summum Christian Church and also attended the Astoria Christian Church. She enjoyed doing word search puzzles, needle point projects, and spending time with her family.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 16th at 11:30 am at the Summum Cemetery. Pastor Darrin Fish will officiate. Friends may call at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, prior to the graveside service. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a limit of 10 people will be allowed in the funeral home at one time and social distancing will be required. Memorials in Shirley's memory may be made to The Elms in Macomb.

Steven, when you were just a little boy you had a tiny terrier, that Sandy and i gave your family. we lived across the street from you then in Astoria.Great memories of your mom and dad and of course you as a little boy. I am sad to hear of her passing.My mom passed away 12 years ago, Its hard, but your memories will get you through, and time will heal.

I am so sorry for your loss, Your mother and myself used to visit when my mother was in Astoria nursing home, your mother used to watch over her when I was not around. I had visited your mother in your lovely home a few times and you were so nice to welcome me. I am a niece of my uncle & aunt Hiram & Clela Thompson and of Ila (Thompson) and Bill Lockard. I am so sorry for your loss, Steve. I will always remember painting your mom's nails pink as her beloved Buffy would sit on her lap. Every Saturday she would have me make ya'll hamburgers with green beans and mushrooms. I will never forget listening to her play the organ and then watching The Rifleman as she would crochet a ripple Afghan in the afternoon. She was sweet, sassy, funny...and one of my favorite memories. I bet her hair is perfectly curled and her nails are bright pink in heaven.

Mom, Melba Collins, and I had visited her in Macomb before. Mom always did enjoy their visits a lot, as did I!
